DIY Flower Canvas Project

It's pretty awesome that I've been getting consistent page views the past few days. Usually I'd gain one or two when I made a new post... but now I feel like the number is different every time I log onto my dashboard. So exciting!! Thank you, thank you for visiting my space and seeing what I had to say.

I got all of the things I wanted to get done yesterday, and then some! So happy!

Yesterday I took on a little crafting project! Which I adapted from here.

I wanted to use my bigger canvas for some map transferring, so I used my medium sized canvas and made a simpler and smaller pattern.

Before I glued! I cut out some bigger sized petals and smaller sized petals out of some scrapbooking paper. I decided on a design and then put it on another piece of paper the exact way and started gluing!

And it's finished! Doesn't look too much different, ahaha. But it's okay. It may be upside down but what's awesome is that it could go any way you want! It'd even work if I held it landscape.

For this project, I used
  • Utrecht Gloss Medium (instead of Mod Podge)
  • Different kinds of scrapbooking paper
  • Scissors
  • Utrecht Foam Brush (disposable, use a size proportional to your canvas
  • Utrecht Stretched Cotton Canvas (any size you'd like! I bought a few when they were on sale at the store so I had a couple to chose from. I can't remember it's exact size at the moment D: )
  • Utrecht acrylic paint
First I painted the background to my canvas using Utrecht acrylic paint. You could use any color that you'd like! I used Ben's old paint, and this was the only color he had, which completely worked for me.  I liked the neutral background and it looked good with my darker scrapbooking paper.

Then I cut out my petals. I used four different papers, but all from the same packet of paper (it was a gift so I don't know where it was purchased or the name of the brand, sorry!) and cut different sized petals. I played with the positioning for awhile.

After I got everything where I wanted it to be, I took a piece of paper and placed my pieces one by one to the other paper so I could easily glue them on place on the canvas. I also took a picture of how everything was positioned (obviously) so if something got messed up, I still had my plan in handy.

Then I glued! I used the gloss medium like glue. It also works as a sealer. I placed all my petals in their spots and waited a few minutes for them to settle. After, I painted a layer of the gloss over the entire canvas to seal it in place. Then I let it dry!

That's it!

I can't wait to decorate my room with my own decor :p

I made my sister's dress!!

Yes!! Saturday I was super productive and made my sister's maxi dress. When I went to the fabric store on Friday, I forgot to buy a zipper for the dress (of course) so after I cut my fabric and had it all ready to go, I walked to Chinatown to get my zippers. On the way I stopped at Boloco for a Mango Passion Smoothie. It was so delicious and perfect to beat the heat.

I didn't completely finish the dress, it still needs to be hemmed and I need to adjust the zipper a bit and had a hook and eye.

I had so much fun making it and felt so good after I finally finished.

So happy with how it came out! Of course there's a few rough areas, but they'll only improve and go away as my skills improve. But for my first garment, I'm pretty proud of myself. I strayed from the pattern a little bit but I like how it came out.

Monday again!

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a great 4th of July! I also hope you had a long break like I did! I was lucky enough to get Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday off and paid! But now it's back to the full work week and being productive (after I finish this blog post...) Which I can't lie, I missed the routine. Doing tons of nothing gets to me. But I'm glad to get back into the swing of things.

So I haven't updated since last Monday, ahh!! I've just been too busy.

Tuesday - My last day of work for the week. I was able to leave at lunch time. So I went home and ate with Benjamin. Then I just cleaned, hung around the house, and started on a pair of shorts from some fabric and a pattern I had! Benjamin and I were having a sort of rough patch the past weekend so it was nice to spend the extra time with him. He knew we were both being difficult and I was a little homesick, so my baby surprised me with some much needed delicious desserts. I'm so lucky :)

I got TWO!! of these little fruit tarts. Soooosososo good!

I also got two chocolate truffle mousse cake things. Which I think were more for Benjamin. We shared this but it was still so good! The fruit was my favorite, but I'll take either any day :)

Wednesday - 4th of July!!! Though, Ben and I will be doing our celebrating at his house the following Saturday. His sister flew in from Chicago the night before (Tuesday) and her boyfriend was flying in on Friday for the family party. So Ben and I kept cool in the house all day and then went to the movies to see Prometheus. It kept us entertained, to say the least. We don't feel it explained anything... just left you with more questions...

Thursday - Ben's parents drove his sister, Lauren, to our apartment in Boston to spend the night by us. We went out to eat at Victoria's Diner (my favorite! and not just because we share the same name) and then Ben's Mom, Laurie, Lauren, and I went thrifting at a giant Goodwill which Ben and his dad, Bruno, went to a card shop. I got a skirt (which I'm wearing currently at work!), a dress from H&M, and some vintage plates, saucers, and teacups! I decided I'm going to collect a mismatch dish set with teacups. I absolutely love old plates and all the floral and how it's decorated. I also love mismatch. Now I just need some girlfriends to have a tea party, yay! Then Laurie and Bruno headed back to their house while Lauren, Ben, and I hung out. Lauren had a few of her friends over from high school who live in the city now. I told them about sewing and fruit dehydrating and just chatted and we had dinner at Tasty Burger. Seriously, best burgers EVER. I got the Kahuna burger. Mmmmm :) Should of taken pictures. Oh well, it was dark. Then we headed back to our place and chatted some more before we called it a night.

Friday - Lauren and I woke up early to go on a coffee date. A local coffee shop I have never been to that Lauren and I were planning to try was closed, so we just walked to Starbucks. It was so hot! I couldn't wait to have my iced coffee and petite vanilla scone. We were there from 9:30 AM -12:30 PM!  We just hung out and talked. I don't have a lot of girlfriends, and the ones I do don't know Benjamin very well so it was nice to be able to talk about my relationship to another female who actually knows Benjamin. That might be the most difficult part of being away. Having almost two different lives filled with completely different people. The people from home just don't know the people in Boston or even think similarly, and vise versa. Slowly my Boston life has taken over my New Jersey one, but that's life.  I'm so grateful for my new life and am so glad I followed the path I did that got me where I am today. After we got back, we hung around the house until Ben's Mom picked us up and brought us back to their house. Ben and I hung out with friends while Lauren and Bruno got her boyfriend, Josh, from the airport.

Saturday - Ben's family party! It was so nice to see all his family, and spent time with his sister. She went to school in Savannah and now lives in Chicago so no one gets to see that much of her. His family is truly my my family as well so I felt comfortable and welcomed. Lauren and I felt we needed sun hats for the party and being out on the boat, so we got some at T.J. Maxx's the day before. Best decision ever. I only have a few photos, but here they are :)

My colorful and huge hat and my Benjmain

Captain Ben on the boat!

Lauren and I and our hats :)

and I was lucky enough to go on a romantic canoe ride with my love, and I didn't have to paddle

Sunday - We woke up early and went to a giant flea market a couple towns over from Ben. All I got was some natural raw wildflower honey from Maine. My life goal is to have my own beehive on my property when I have a house. I want to be a beekeeper! And make my own honey, chapstick, beeswax, and whatever else. After we got back, we just slowly headed back to Boston. Ben and I watched Machete and I went to bed early.

It was such a perfect weekend!

How To : DIY Wrap Skirt

Yes! I finally sat down and made my sister's skirt, and documented all the steps to 1. have as a reference, and 2. to share with whomever is reading this :) I mentioned this photo in another post promising to post a little how-to, and here it is!

I hope the directions are clear and understandable! Of course, if you'd like to make the skirt and you're unsure of a step, just ask in a comment or send me an email and I'll be glad to answer any questions! and if you do use this, and post it in your blog or something, please link and credit me. Thank you.

SO!

Step 1 and 2. Cut your skirt and ties

First, you're going to cut your fabric. The skirt part should be cut at 54" by 19". Next, you have to cut fabric for your two ties. The ties should be cut at 27" by 3".

Step 3. Make friends with the iron

**A tip for pinning : When you pin, always picture how the material is going to fed through your machine. The bulk of your material will always be on the left when going through the machine, so when you pin, hold the material how it will be sewn and put the pins in with the heads facing you. This way, the pins are easy to grab and remove as you sew your fabric.

Now you're going to iron and pin your straps. Begin by folding a side of the fabric halfway in towards the middle, then iron. Do to the same to the other side. Then you're going to fold the fabric in half again, then iron and pin to stay in place. You could turn off the iron, for now.

Step 4. Folding and pinning darts

This is probably the trickiest part of the whole skirt, but it's still pretty easy. The darts are what give this simple wrap skirt some shape.

First measure in 20" from the end of your skirt. Fold over a piece of fabric 3/4"

Pin where your dart is to start (the white pin head) then, you're going to measure down 5". At 5" down, you're going to pinch the fabric and pin it at the end. You're going to sew this on an angle, so at the end of the 5", you're just going to sew off the fabric (The dart is marked where it'll end by the red pin, but you would sew to the end of the pin, that's why it's angled. I post pictures of it sewn a couple of steps down if you're still confused!)

Now you're going to measure 2" over from the first dart. This time, your dart is only going to be 1/2" wide and 4" down.

Measure 3" across and do the same to the other side. The inside darts are 1/2" wide and 4" deep while the outside darts are 3/4" wide and 5" deep.

Step 5. Whip the iron back out

Now you're going to iron and pin all your hems. You're going to use the same method as folding an ironing the straps. Fold over the edge first to keep it in place, iron. Then fold over the edge again, and iron. Then pin. First, do the sides of the skirt, then the bottom, saving the top with the darts for last. After you have all your hems in place, you could put away your iron.

Both ironing and pinning really help me. Maybe because I'm a beginner, but whatever. It helps set the material that's to be sewn (this is extremely helpful for when you actually sew the darts) and I'm a visual learner, so I like to see how to piece is supposed to look, and it gives you the opportunity to notice if you're doing something wrong, rather than just fold over the edge and put it through the machine. But you should especially pin where the ends of your skirt meet (like the red pin in the corner of the second picture) to assure you keep all ends in place when you sew your skirt.

Step 6. Time to sew the darts

Since you ironed all your hems, everything should more or less stay in place. To sew your dart, take out the pin near the hem. (This picture was taken after I sewed my darts, but I thought it'd do more good as the first picture rather than last)

I edited the two bottom pictures just so you could see the thread easier. It's not the best, but trust me, it's better than how it was before. After you sew the dart, you could just tie off the thread and cut. Do this for the rest of your darts.

After you sew your darts, fold your hem back over.

Step 7. Sew the hem

Now you're going to sew first, the sides and second, the bottom of your skirt.

Step 8. Sew the ties

Time to sew the ties. Simply sew them along the side. BUT! Only finish ONE end of the ties. To finish, fold over one of the ends. Then sew the flap down to the inside. Make sure you when you sew, you reverse stitch a couple of times. Remember, you'll be pulling these ties to tie the skirt, so they'll be getting a lot of pull and use. You don't want them to rip.

Step 9. Attach ties to skirt

This is why you save the top of the skirt last to sew and why you only finish one end of the ties. Take out the pin securing the top hem to the side hem. Then unfold the side once. Place the unfinished end of your tie here, then fold over.

And sew in place! Again, remember to reverse stitch when you attach the ties.

You finished the skirt! Yay!!!!

Wrap Skirt

My wrap skirt! It's so simple, I made it in one night.. and this was my first time sewing ever! When I make the next one for my sister, I'll post the how to. But it was finally beautiful out in Boston and I was able to wear my 3 dollar skirt :)

It's perfect for the office or just hanging out, but I wouldn't suggest wearing it on a day where you're running around going from errand to errand. It has the tendency to ride up a little bit since it's only held in place by the tie. Today was the day I got a ride to work with the boys so I didn't have to walk to work (which is about a mile) in the skirt. After work today, I'm going grocery shopping for Benjamin and I so I brought shorts to change into after to shop comfortably then walk home. Walking to the grocery store from work then back to the apartment will result in a mile+ hike in the concrete jungle in this 100 degree weather with bags of groceries... oh, city living.
